Technically, an Axial Flow Pump is a type of centrifugal pump, but when people say "centrifugal pump" in industry, they usually mean the standard Radial Flow Pump.

Inlet: Liquid enters the center (eye).
Action: The impeller spins and hurls the liquid directly outward (90 degrees to the shaft) into a spiral casing (volute).

* Axial Flow:
Inlet: Liquid enters the center.
Action: The impeller (which looks like a boat propeller) pushes the liquid straight through (parallel to the shaft).

This is the most critical difference for selecting a pump:
